Monday's Postcard: Cats


The Alfred Mainzer Company has published these cards for 50-60 years. These funny cats are drawn by European artist Eugen Hurtung. The images were popular and used on postcards which are still sold today. They are usually called Mainzer Cats after the name of the publisher. I received this postcard from my Grandmother Arkebauer, who lived in Fort Wayne, IN. She often sent Mainzer cards to me and my sister.

These painted, 'human' cats always creeped me out when I was a kid much like the poker-playing dogs. Whenever I see them, it reminds me of my uncle who loved this sort of thing!
